Type of guitar

Guitars come in a dizzying array of styles and types, all aimed at fulfilling a certain function. The type of guitar I am concerned with is the nylon strung classical guitar which is intended to be plucked with the fingers rather than a plectrum.

If you are a beginner your guitar really doesn’t need to cost a fortune, and affordability is one of the big advantages of playing the guitar, but at the same time it is always more satisfying if you have an instrument that works well and makes a pleasing sound. If not, you really won’t want to play it!

Many guitars small enough for young children come in a variety of colours, often with images of cartoon character transfers on the the front, however I would avoid these at all costs as they rarely work satisfactorily! It is worth paying a little more and going to a reputable music shop who should be able to offer something of a more playable quality. The important thing though is to buy a “classical guitar” which has nylon strings, rather than steel.

I hope in the future to be able to list tried and tested makes of full sized instruments which would be excellent first or second guitars.
